Climate Implications of Diffusion-based Generative Visual AI Systems and their Mass Adoption

Climate implications of rapidly developing digital technologies, such as blockchains and the associated crypto mining and NFT minting, have been well documented and their massive GPU energy use has been identified as a cause for concern. However, we postulate that due to their more mainstream consumer appeal, the GPU use of text-prompt based diffusion AI art systems also requires thoughtful considerations. Given the recent explosion in the number of highly sophisticated generative art systems and their rapid adoption by consumers and creative professionals, the impact of these systems on the climate needs to be carefully considered. In this work, we report on the growth of diffusion-based visual AI systems, their patterns of use, growth and the implications on the climate. Our estimates show that the mass adoption of these tools potentially contributes considerably to global energy consumption. We end this paper with our thoughts on solutions and future areas of inquiry as well as associated difficulties, including the lack of publicly available data.


Loquacity and Visible Emotion: ChatGPT as a Policy Advisor

ChatGPT, a software seeking to simulate human conversational abilities, is attracting increasing attention. It is sometimes portrayed as a groundbreaking productivity aid, including for creative work. In this paper, we run an experiment to assess its potential in complex writing tasks. We ask the software to compose a policy brief for the Board of the Bank of Italy. We find that ChatGPT can accelerate workflows by providing well-structured content suggestions, and by producing extensive, linguistically correct text in a matter of seconds. It does, however, require a significant amount of expert supervision, which partially offsets productivity gains. If the app is used naively, output can be incorrect, superficial, or irrelevant. Superficiality is an especially problematic limitation in the context of policy advice intended for high-level audiences.

Artificial intelligence is about to have its "iPhone moment" and could revolutionize everything, according to Bank of America. In a Tuesday note to clients, BofA strategists listed four reasons why AI is about to change the landscape: democratization of data, unprecedented mass adoption, "warp-speed" technological development, and abundant commercial uses. "We are at a defining moment - like the internet in the '90s - where Artificial Intelligence (AI) is moving towards mass adoption, with large language models like ChatGPT finally enabling us to fully capitalize on the data revolution," they said. Up until recently, AI could read and write but couldn't understand content, BofA said. Tools like ChatGPT have changed that, however, and its ability to understand natural language has opened the door to huge upside.

While there's been huge investment in developing vehicular autonomous driving technology, there's been little by cities in the infrastructure necessary for vehicles to communicate with each other (vehicle-to-vehicle), or their surroundings (vehicle-to-vehicle infrastructure). Mass adoption of AI can aid Brazil's economic recovery, study says

The Brazilian economy could benefit from a boost of up to 4.2% within the next decade if companies and governments promote large-scale adoption of artificial intelligence, according to a new study by consulting firm FrontierView commissioned by Microsoft. The potential of GDP increase of more than four percentage points is the most optimistic scenario set out in the reseach, whereby AI use goes beyond automation and is used to create highly skills jobs, drive productivity and economic growth. Even in the most conservative scenario, where the technology is minimally used and only for automation, Brazil could see a 1.8% GDP boost, according to the research. Both scenarios assume that Brazil will adopt all the AI features currently available until 2030. "Our research has found that artificial intelligence can be a driver of Brazil's economic recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic. With the right strategies and investments, the country can increase its economic growth and increase the productivity of the population", said research director for Latin America at FrontierView, Pablo Gonzalez Alonso.
